Wise Business Requirements for US Companies

What Wise asks a US company for, which addresses it accepts in each slot, where it doesn't operate and what it charges, taken from Wise's own help pages. Wise reviews every business and makes the decision.

This is our summary, not Wise's. Its rules can change, so its own pages are the final word.

Owners and one controller

Anyone who directly or indirectly owns 25% or more, or controls the company, plus one designated controller. Wise takes only individual people, not companies. It asks for an SSN from owners who live in the US or hold a US passport, and a photo ID from non-US owners. How Wise verifies UBOs

Identity documentClear photo of the original
  • PassportPhoto page only
  • National ID cardPlastic card, both sides. No US military IDs
  • Photo driving licenceNo electronic licences, and none if you live in the EEA

An acceptable ID

The ID must show your full name, a clear photo and your date of birth, be unexpired, and have its document number and machine-readable code visible, with nothing hidden. How does Wise verify my identity?

Documents Wise may requestOnly if asked
  • Proof of business registrationCertificate of incorporation or a registry excerpt
  • Proof of trading addressA recent utility bill, lease or bank statement
  • Ownership documentsShareholder register or operating agreement
  • Personal IDAccount administrator, maybe other owners

Documents on request

Wise captures most details at sign-up and emails you if its team needs papers. If you're not a director, you'll need proof you can open the account, such as a signed letter of authorisation. Wise says not to send documents unless it asks. How can I verify my business?

Proving your trading address

Wise says the trading address must be a physical place where you actually run the business, and it will eventually ask for a document that proves it.

Documents Wise accepts

A clear photo or PDF showing the business or owner's name, the full trading address, an issue date and the sender's name or logo.

  • Utility bill. Gas, electricity, broadband or internet, or a landline. Not mobile phone bills.
  • Lease or rental agreement. Current and signed by both you and the landlord.
  • Bank or credit card statement. Most banks and neobanks. Wise says it can't accept statements from Mercury.
  • Business licence or registration document. An official government-issued document.
  • Tax document. A tax return, filing or official letter from a tax authority such as the IRS.
  • Business insurance policy. Commercial, liability, business owner's, umbrella or professional.

Bills, statements, licences and registration documents must be under 3 months old; others, such as tax bills and insurance policies, under 12 months. How does Wise verify my business address?

Working from home

No bills in the company's name?

Wise calls this common. A significant owner or director of a company such as an LLC can use a document in their personal name, like a utility bill, bank statement or tenancy agreement, as long as its address matches the trading address on the Wise account.

Common rejection reasons

  • The document is too old.
  • It shows an SSN.
  • Some information isn't visible, or only one side was uploaded.
  • Its details don't match your Wise account.
  • It isn't an accepted type, such as a mobile phone bill.
  • It isn't a PDF, JPEG or PNG.

Where Wise Business doesn't work

Three kinds of limits: US states and territories, countries, and business activities. Wise says its lists can change and aren't exhaustive.

Not onboarded

Nevada and US territories

Wise says that due to licensing limitations it can't onboard businesses from Nevada or the US territories: American Samoa, Guam, the Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands.

Wise's help article says businesses “from” Nevada and its blog says businesses “located in” Nevada. Ask Wise if either applies to you. US verification

How verification runs, and what it costs

The order of work and the US business fees Wise publishes. Its pricing page is the one to check before you pay.

  1. 1

Sign up and describe the business: registration number, both addresses, industry, website and the key people.

  2. 2

Pay the one-time set-up fee or set up your first transfer. Wise says this triggers its main verification review.

  3. 3

Wise runs an initial review from what you entered.

  4. 4

If it needs more, its verification team emails you from a Wise.com address with an upload link.

  5. 5

Wise says the extra review usually takes up to 10 working days. Review times vary; Wise sets them. Verification steps

Two Wise pages, two timings

The business verification article says the extra review usually takes up to 10 working days. The UBO article says Wise aims to get back to you in 5 working days. Neither is a promise, so plan for the longer one. How Wise verifies UBOs

New team members also need to be verified when you add them, Wise's blog notes.
